Questions about paints and finishing materials

About paint dilution

For Mr. Color, dilute 0 to 0.5 parts of the thinner liquid to 1 part of the paint for brush painting, and 2 to 3 times the thinner liquid for airbrush painting. However, since each color actually has a slightly different viscosity, it is best to gradually adjust the ratios above.
Water-based hobby colors generally do not need to be diluted when applied with a brush. If the viscosity is high and difficult to apply, or for spray painting with an airbrush such as Pro Spray or Procon Boy, please dilute 1 part paint to 1 part thinner. It can be diluted with water, but if you use a water-based hobby color thinner, it will dry more easily and reduce the “repelling” phenomenon when painting with an airbrush.
There is no need to dilute Acrision when applying with a brush. When you use an airbrush to paint, use a ratio of 1 part paint to 0.3 parts thinner liquid for dilution.

Is it possible to mix colors with aqueous hobby color and Mr. Color, or aqueous hobby color and Acrysion?

Paints with different component systems cannot be mixed. Since the ingredients are completely different, they won’t mix well and will become mushy. Although Mr. Color is referred to as a “lacquer paint” in some media, it is actually a solvent-based acrylic resin paint. Water-based hobby color is classified as water-soluble acrylic resin paint, and Acrysion is classified as water-based acrylic resin paint (emulsion type). Even when diluting with other companies’ products in the same category, we cannot guarantee that the color can be mixed as the composition of the solvent, pigment, and resin may be different.

What should I be careful about when using different types of paint together?

Due to the character of the solvent used in the paint, it may or may not be possible to apply multiple coats. If you use Mr. Color over water-based hobby color, it erodes the underlying water-based hobby color and causes it to dissolve. This is because Mr. Color’s solvent is stronger than the aqueous hobby color coating. On the other hand, there is basically no problem in using water-based hobby color over Mr. Color, but water-based hobby color also uses a solvent, although it has a weaker dissolving power than Mr. Color, please note that there is a possibility that the surface of Mr. Color may be slightly damaged.
Acrysion is a water-based paint and will not erode the underlying base when it is painted. In addition, since the coating film of Acrysion is very strong, it is possible to overcoat Mr. Color and water-based hobby color on top. However, if the new water-based hobby color is used as a base, if drying is insufficient or the paint film is too thick, cracks may occur due to the shrinkage rate of the Acrysion paint film.

I would like to use Mr. Color on a kit whose color is specified by another company's product. Could you please tell me the corresponding color?

For the colors of tanks and fighter planes, there may be slight differences in color tone between manufacturers, but since we commercialize our products after collecting infomation directly on actual aircraft, please refer to the information about color names and usages listed in the color chart to choose appilcable colors. If it is a color that we do not sell, we cannot determine the approximate color or blending ratio, so please refer to other companies’ color charts to adjust the color.

Please tell me the color mixing ratio for other companies' kits.

Please contact each manufacturer regarding the color combinations written in the instructions.

I am having trouble with the painted surface turning white.

This is caused by a phenomenon called “fogging.” This phenomenon occurs when moisture in the air or air from an airbrush remains trapped in the paint before it dries and forms a paint film. This especially occurs on rainy days, during the rainy season, and in the summer when the humidity tends to be high. To avoid this, when using an airbrush, use accessories with water removal functions such as various regulators or Mr. Drain & Dust Catcher, or be careful about the temperature and humidity of the room when drying. We also recommend using a drying accelerator such as Mr. Dry Booth. If the paint becomes cloudy, use sandpaper to remove the paint and repaint.

Please tell me the difference between Masking Sol Kai and Masking Sol NEO.

Masking Sol Kai can be cut after drying and only the parts to be painted can be removed. It’s also water-soluble, so you can dilute it a little and clean your brushes with just water. Anything that gets on the brush can be removed even after it dries.
Masking Sol NEO is a rubber-based masking material. Since it is rubber, it is elastic and cannot be cut after drying, but it can be diluted with water before drying. Since it is easy to remove, it is effective for covering large areas and filling gaps between masks. Wash your brush as soon as possible after using it. After drying, it becomes insoluble in water.

There are many types of surfacers, I don't know which one to use.

First, regarding the number on the surfacer cans, it indicates the coarseness of the particles. 500 is the coarsest and 1500 is the finest. Choose a rough one if there are large scratches on the surface, or choose a fine one if you plan to paint it as a base. There is also White Surfacer, which is a white surfacer which is effective for color development, and Base White, which has even stronger hiding power to the base. Please select according to your purpose. The bottle type surfacer is compatible with both brush painting and airbrush painting, so you can paint every detail. The standard dilution is 1 part paint to 1 to 2 parts thinner.

Is it okay to use Mr. Super Clear for Mr. Metal Color?

Due to the character of Mr. Metal Color, if you coat it with super clear, the color will become dull and dark. This is because the resin component contained in Super Clear makes the metal particles of the metal color float. When applying a coat finish, we recommend using a water-based top coat.

Can Mr. Super Clear be used with Mr. Super Metallic 2?

Mr. Super Metallic Series (SM201-SM209) can be used with Super Clear. However, due to the material nature of SM206 (Chrome Silver 2) and SM208 (Super Duralumin), we do not recommend applying a clear coat as it will lose its luster.

Questions about airbrush compressors

I'm using Pro Spray, but the paint does not come out but only air does.

Paint cannot be sprayed unless the suction nozzle is in the correct position. Please refer to the manual and adjust the air outlet and nozzle. First, look for a point where the water can be sprayed in a nice mist. If you replace it with paint in this state, paint will come out.
If the paint still does not come out, it may be because the paint has a high viscosity. For water-based hobby colors, add water or water-based hobby color thinner little by little to adjust. For Mr. Color, add Mr. Color Thinner, Leveling Thinner, or Rapid Thinner. For airbrush painting, Mr. Color needs to be diluted 2 to 3 times the amount of paint with a thinner.
Alternatively, the air holes in the bottle attachment may be blocked by dried paint. If it is blocked, the paint will not be sucked up.
Another possibility is that the paint nozzle is clogged. After use, please clean it frequently with Mr. Tool Cleaner Kai etc.

Is it possible to connect Creos Airbrush Pro Spray to a compressor made by another company?

Although general statements about other compressors cannot be easily made, there are generally two types of discharge ports. One is 1/4 size and the other is 1/8 size, and these two types are standard sizes and are used both overseas and domestically. If you want to connect our airbrush to a compressor with a discharge port of such size, you will need a conversion joint. In the case of 1/8 size, please use joint ① or joint ② included in the “Mr. Joint 3-piece set” sold by our company, and convert the discharge port size to PS (thin) size, you can connect them.
In the case of 1/4 size, we do not sell conversion joints. You will need to purchase an adapter from another company or a 1/4 to 1/8 adapter at a home improvement store, etc., and then connect using the method described above. In either case, please check the outlet specifications of the compressor you own or are considering purchasing beforehand.

Can I replace the airbrush's paint nozzle and change to a different diameter?

Our airbrushes can only be equipped with specific paint nozzles. Even if it can be installed, please refrain from replacing it as it may not be possible to paint or cause a malfunction.

While using the compressor, water spewed out from the airbrush and the painting failed. Is there a problem with the compressor?

This is due to the moisture in the air being compressed and condensing inside the hose, which then comes out along with the air, and is not a malfunction of the compressor. Even if it’s not raining, there’s a lot of moisture in the air, so you can’t let your guard down. The solution is to install a drain between the compressor and the hose. We sell regulators and drain & dust catchers with water draining functions, using them will greatly improve the situation.
